Pre-registration info

Dear Students,

Here are a few details and reminders to help you figure out which courses you want to take next semester.

EUR 302, EUR/POS 307, and EUR 404/POS 401c are cross-listed and can be taken for either EUR or POS credit. Students double-majoring in EUR and POS should be aware that they cannot double-count more than three courses toward both majors.

EUR/POS 307 is a prerequisite for the senior thesis, but can also be taken by students who do not intend to write a thesis.

Students majoring in POS can substitute ECO 310, PHI 304, or one EUR course at the 400 level for one of the POS 401 topics they need to take.

POS 301, 303, and probably 304 will be offered in spring 2014 (and EUR 302 and EUR/POS307 are offered every semester). POS 305 may be offered in fall 2014.

POS 201 and EUR 404/POS 401c will be taught by Ms. Sabina Hilaiel, a doctoral candidate at the University of Denver. She will replace for one semester Prof. Zankina who will be on leave. We were quite impressed with her credentials, and are confident she will make a valuable contribution to our department. Prof. Sardamov will also be on leave in the fall.

In case you have any questions or concerns, please consult your academic advisers or the faculty members teaching the courses you are interested in.

Welcome back and Happy New Year

Dear Students,

Welcome back after a well deserved break – and best of luck for the still new 2013.
Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding our course line-up for the spring semester:
We are glad to welcome back Simonida Kacarska, who graduated from AUBG in 2004 and is finishing up a Ph.D. at the University of Leeds. She will offer EUR 212 EU Politics and EUR 405 Europeanization (a topic related to her dissertation). She is the third alumna we have brought back to teach for a semester at AUBG in recent years - after Aneta Spendzharova (now Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Maastricht) and Cvete Koneska (who is finishing a Ph.D. at Oxford).
Please note that POS majors can take EUR 302 Comparative Politics of Europe as one of the three required courses they need at the 300-hundred level; and have EUR 404 Tyrannies count as a 400-level POS course. Students who are double-majoring should keep in mind that they cannot double-count more than three courses towards their two majors.
EUR/POS 307 Research Methods is a prerequisite for the senior thesis in both majors. In order to be granted the opportunity to write a senior thesis, students need to have the research proposal they develop in the methods course accepted by a departmental panel. They also need to have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in courses counted toward the major. The methods course can also be taken by students who do not wish (or qualify) to write a senior thesis since it offers good preparation for applying to master’s programs.
Unfortunately, we needed to cancel two courses which were underenrolled: EUR 301 EU Law and Institutions and POS401 Security Sector Governance in Southeastern Europe. EUR 301 will be offered again in the fall; students who need it in order to graduate with a EUR major in May should schedule an appointment with Prof. Tanasoiu to discuss alternatives. Also, Prof. Kolarov’s remaining class, EUR 320 Internal Market and EU Competition Law needed to be rescheduled in one back-to-back session once a week (from 2:15 p.m. on Monday) since he could not travel twice a week from Sofia for one course.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns as you are sorting out your course schedule for spring semester. IS
